College Students Get Into Microfinance LendingMay 18, 2012
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Imagine that you have lost your job. You could start a sewing business at home if you had a better sewing machine and a little money to advertise. But you cannot get a loan from a bank. In recent times, many people in similar situations have received loans from student microfinance groups. Such groups make small loans for business or personal use. Twelve of the organizations are part of a national network called the Campus Microfinance Alliance. The alliance provides financial aid, technical advice and training programs for its member groups. Each group has between ten and seventy volunteers, many of them college students. They have enabled hundreds of people across the United States to launch small businesses. Vanessa Carter is director of the alliance. She says bad economic times have sped the growth of the college microfinance movement. "This really got started because students were walking off campus, it was the height of the economic recession, and they were seeing boarded up businesses and the effects of high unemployment first hand."In Iowa, a student microfinance group at Grinnell College helps people both locally and internationally. The group started in two thousand seven. At that time, Grinnell student Jeff Raderstrong and some friends raised more than six hundred dollars from other students. The Saturday-night Grinnell tradition of missing a meal to help others enabled the ...

House Votes to Stop Student Loan Rates from DoublingMay 17, 2012
Today the House "ignored a veto threat" and passed a measure to stop new student loan rates from doubling this summer. The bill pays for extending current rates by cutting a slush fund the president himself proposed cutting from ObamaCare -- a law that's making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers, including recent college graduates. Student Loan Scam -- from Rocky Mtn HomelessnessMay 04, 2012
If you're thinking that taking out loans will help you to get an education, you may be right. But what you'll learn may also surprise you. Many college graduates are learning that the reality of the "American Dream" is actually a nightmare. Unless you want to ruin yourself financially, DON'T DO IT!--DON'T TAKE OUT LOANS IN ORDER TO GET A COLLEGE DEGREE! Seriously, there is no guarantee that you'll get a job, much less a high paying job, upon graduation. There is also (and few people are talking about this) a tremendous amount of discrimination that college grads have no control over. Women, for example, typically are hired for dead-end clerical jobs that prevent them from ever gaining positions of power within most companies. Students who come from poor or working class families typically don't have the "connections" that are so important for obtaining the really good jobs. Minority students of color face the "dead end job" dilemma that economically oppresses women. And some employers conduct credit checks on potential employees, leaving some college grads with student loan debt unemployable! Knowing all this, graduating from college can leave you with tremendous debt that can not be eliminated by bankruptcy. Even if you find yourself homeless, you will still be required to pay off those loans. Sallie Mae, contrary to popular opinion, is a for profit company. Lenders can sell your loans, add interest and fees onto the balance and make huge profits if you are unable to pay ...
